“Engaging the Audience: How News Organizations Are Coming Out of the Newsroom and Finding New Ways to Connect” -Engagement is a popular topic in newsrooms and the academy today as journalists and media managers seek new ways to connect with the audience and experiment with alternative revenue streams. AEJMC President Paula Poindexter has identified news audience engagement as one of the key initiatives of her term, and this panel’s speakers will examine what news organizations are doing to appeal to readers/viewers in ways that get journalists and managers out of the newsroom. Successful activities have included quiz bowls, cook-offs and bar nights. Researchers on the panel will discuss implications of findings related to news-consumption motivations of various publics.
